CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION TO CHEMISTRY

What is Chemistry

1. The word chemistry is believed to have originated from the Arabic word 'al-kamiyah' which mean 'The art of transforming metals '
2. Chemistry is branch of science which study the properties, composition, and interaction of matter.
3. Chemistry plays an important part in all of the other natural sciences, basic and applied, such as plant growth and metabolism. All these phenomenon cannot be understand without the knowledge of the chemistry
 4. Chemistry is a way of studying matter.  matter is anything which  has mass and occupies space.

The importance of Chemistry

1. In chemistry, all matter can be considered as chemicals. Thus, chemicals are not only found in the laboratory, but also in common substances such as air, water, oil and metals.
2. chemicals are present in food, medicines, clothing, household, cleaning products around us. All these chemical can exist in natural and synthetic form.
3. One of the goals of studying chemistry is to be able to describe the properties of matter inn terms of the internal structure, the arrangement and interrelationship of the part.
4. There are three main branches of chemistry:
  (a) Inorganic chemistry
This branch of chemistry specialises in the description of the behavior of chemical  substances without        carbon.
  (b) Physical chemistry
this branch of chemistry specialises in tre description of the behaviour of chemical substance.
  (c) Biochemistry
This branch of chemistry deals with the composition of living thing
Chemistry-related Careers
  1. Understanding chemistry is an advantage in almost all careers. Chemistry is often called a central science because the basic knowledge of chemistry is a essential for professions that are related to the study of other subjects such as biology, physics and geology.

Chemicals-based Industries in Indonesia
  1. The chemicals produced are either directly used in our daily lives or are used to support other industries. All these industries help to create jobs and contribute to economic development.
  2. there are many of chemical based-industries in our country. Some of the industries in our country. Some of the industries are summarized in Table

 Scientific Attitudes and Noble Values
1. In all investigation carried out by the scientific attitudes and noble values must be adopted. Noble values need to be adopted are as follows:
 (a) All observation and inferences must be done objectively, carefully and honestly
 (b) Must be systematic when planning and carrying out an experiment.
 (c) Interest and concern about the environment
 (d) Responsible for the safety of oneself, other and the environment
 (e) Must have rational, critical and analytic thinking in data interpretation, inference and conclusions.
2. Each of these values will increased the validity of investigation and the ability to solve problems.
